Whether you're looking for a desk for your new working from home space or for the kids to craft or do homework, getting the right one to fit your home and style can be a struggle.
What size do you need? What chair will fit? Is it big enough? Is it too big? How long will it last? These are all questions that will run through your mind when you are thinking about what desk to go for. We've all been spending a lot more time at home over the past year and with working from home becoming the new 'norm' you want to make sure it is comfortable and will be a pleasant space to work in.
We have hopefully seen the back of home schooling, but if you can create a separate space for them where they can do their homework or get crafty/arty that's brilliant. If it's one that's fun and works for them they are more likely to not only love it but use it on a regular basis.
To help you choose the right desk, I have compiled some advice and recommendations which I hope will help.
What size do you need?
Choosing the right size desk is probably the most important factor to consider. You want a desk that works well in your chosen space and for how you or your child works. Comfort is key so making sure it's the right height with enough leg room is of paramount importance. Many desks have shelves underneath so check what the height is from the floor to the underside of the desk.
In addition, you also want to think about what the desk is being used for. Do you need space for not only a computer but also writing? If this is the case then a double would probably be a good option. If the room can take it, if you just need space for a laptop then you might be able to get away with a single.
Consider the position of where you want the desk to go; does it have enough light and power? Is it in a quiet area of the house or is that not so much of an issue?
Once you have decided on a position you should measure the space carefully (luckily we don't get many returns because of this, but always good to double check measurements), and don't forget to factor in a chair and any storage you might want.
If you are looking to buy a desk for a child then size is obviously a critical factor. You want to go for something that works for now but for the future too. The worst thing is to buy a desk that will only last a short amount of time, so at Blue Ticking we would always advise going for something with longevity. If the desk is paired with the right height chair then all's well!
We obviously have lots of different options available for both adults and children. Our tall wooden science lab bench is the perfect choice for a space that can fit a good sized desk that isn't too bulky. It has the extra height so is great for adults or teenagers who need something a little taller or like to stand up working occasionally.
If space is limited then a single desk is always a good option. Most come with ample workspace and there are many different heights available.
One of our favourite sets at the moment is the Blue Metal Legged Single Desk and Chair Set. You get the chair with it and it has the added benefit of a shelf underneath for storage.
Do you need storage?
Opting for a desk with storage is the ideal way to keep your workspace tidy and organised. The beauty of many of the vintage desks we find is that they come with handy storage solutions, such as lift up lids or built in shelves and drawers. If the children have lots of stationary or arts and craft materials then it can all be hidden away at the end of the day which is always a joy!
One desk we currently have in stock that offers great storage potential is this Mid Century French desk. It has shelves down one side and below where you sit. A great option if you need plenty of storage space.
What materials should you consider?
If you are looking for a desk for a child that will be mainly used for craft activities like painting and colouring, you might want to consider one that has a top you can easily wipe down. Formica is great for this and we often have a few options available. One such desk is this red formica topped Esavian table with the most incredible abstract pattern.
Wood obviously works well for children too and any marks that can't be removed all add to its character and rich tapestry!
How to add colour
We love anything that is vibrant and colourful and we are always on the look out for bright furniture. We also customise a lot of our desks by adding a pop of colour to the legs, tops or hinges. Whether you have a colour scheme already or want to add more colour to your room then sourcing a piece of furniture which can indulge this can really make a difference.
One such example is this incredible single metal legged desk. We have a number of these available and the best thing is you can choose the colour of the legs, hinges and base. They are a great height too so work for both adults and children.
I hope the above has been helpful and you now know what to consider when finding the right desk for you. Always go for something that will last, works for its intended use and is comfortable. With more of us staying at home it's the perfect time to give your desk space an upgrade!
